Active Ingredients
Resveratrol is produced by plants in response to injury or when the plant is under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi. It is best known as the longevity molecule which slows down the initiation of cell death and plays an important role in fighting oxidative stress and prevents premature aging.
Resveratrol strengthens skin’s anti-oxidative system [1] via two different mechanisms. Firstly, Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant. In skin, it neutralizes free radicals to protect against damage. Additionally, Resveratrol enhances the body’s antioxidative capacity via binding to cell receptors and increasing the building of body’s own antioxidants.
The antioxidant activity of resveratrol (95%) is higher than vitamin E (65%) and C (37%), respectively and has been shown to counteract lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation [2]
Resveratrol can suppress the expression of inflammatory factors [1] by direct or indirect inactivation of proteins responsible for pro-irritating processes in the skin. This leads to reduced skin redness and irritations.
Resveratrol can be found in the cis or trans configuration, with the trans form being biologically active [3].
We use Japanese knotweed, Polygonum cuspidatum, which contains 99% pure trans-resveratrol being the only biologically active form of resveratrol that shows sufficient skin penetration and antioxidant activity in the skin.
